The Liquid Diet - Is it Really Safe and Recommended As a Meal Substitute?

By Harold McDaniels

Drinking your way to a slimmer body sounds like a very promising possibility, though you know that somewhere at the roots, promises like this are fundamentally flawed and have undertones of being too good to be true.

So What Is A Liquid Diet?

Liquid diet or liquid fasting is one way of controlling calorie intake by removing solid foods from the menu for a few days or a week. Thus, all nutrition comes from fluids such as juices, water, teas, and special concoctions.

This type of diet was primarily developed to benefit pre- and post-op patients of bariatic or weight loss surgeries. However, with its reasonable appeal to weight loss, many people also opt to undergo liquid dieting to reduce fat mass from the body.

Safety Issues

If a medical professional supervises the process and if the patient is well-advised as to how the whole thing goes, a liquid diet is guaranteed to be safe. Sadly, this is also a do-it-yourself diet and may sometimes border around being unsafe due to people's lack of appropriate knowledge about proper nutrition and each body's unique mechanisms. It should be noted that the body is a very sophisticated machine with functions and responses that cannot be boxed to a particular type. Thus, responses to liquid fasting differ from one case to another.

Dangerous Consequences

Diets that are made up entirely of teas, over-the-counter products, and other types of liquids may not be safe for the body as these oftentimes lack the nutrition and calories the body needs to function well. Missing out on very essential components such as carbohydrates, proteins, fibers, vitamins, and minerals may prove drastic for the body and may bring a host of unwanted consequences such as digestives ailments, dizziness, heart damage, mood changes, fatigue, and others.

In general, liquid diets can only substitute for solid foods for several days. In the long run, this may compromise health and nutrition.

Remedies

To make this diet safe, one has to consult a medical professional, preferably a dietician, who can determine whether it is recommended for your health and purpose.
